Tandberg 3300X

Cross-field bias. Norway's clever route to cleaner highs.
Tandberg’s answer to a problem every slow-speed tape recording has — muddy, self-erasing highs — was to add a fourth head and bias the tape from the back instead of the front. Tandberg pioneered the idea in the 1960s with the TB-6X, and by the time the 3300X arrived it had matured into a genuinely effective, if slightly odd-looking, four-head transport.

SECTION 01

The Merits

The trick is genuinely clever. At slow tape speeds, high frequencies want to self-erase — the bias signal and the newly recorded highs are so close together on the tape that they bleed into each other before the tape has moved far enough away from the head. Tandberg’s cross-field head sits on the back of the tape and applies the bias signal from there instead, which keeps the two apart and lets the 3300X hold onto real treble even at 3¾ ips, a speed where most decks of its era already sound noticeably dull.
The idea worked well enough that Akai licensed a version of it for their own decks a few years later — this machine is the source of an idea a lot of people who’ve never heard of Tandberg have still benefited from.
A fourth head, bias applied from the back of the tape — a clever fix for a problem most decks just accepted.
SECTION 02

The Quirks

At 9.1 kg this is the lightest machine in the collection by a wide margin, and it shows in the build: a single Papst motor drives everything through belts and idlers, rather than the three-motor logic transports found elsewhere on this shelf. It’s the most mechanically “ordinary” deck here — which also makes it one of the more approachable to service.
Four heads in a deck this size means the head block is unusually crowded; alignment is a more fiddly job than on a simpler three-head machine, and it’s worth finding a tech who’s specifically dealt with a cross-field unit before.

The Sound

The cross-field advantage is real and audible — at 3¾ ips especially, the top end stays present and detailed in a way that catches you off guard for a deck this modest and this light. It doesn’t have the effortless top end of a 15 ips studio machine, but for its class and its speed range, it punches well above its weight.

Buying One

Ask specifically whether the fourth head has ever been realigned or replaced — it’s the one part of this machine that isn’t like anything else in a typical collection, and a previous owner unfamiliar with cross-field bias may have skipped it entirely during a routine service.
How mine runs in the Philippines
The single Papst motor is an AC design, so like the Revox, its speed follows mains frequency rather than correcting for it electronically — worth confirming the motor’s frequency rating before assuming it’ll hold pitch correctly straight off Philippine 60 Hz power.
