Teac A-6300 Mk2

Ten-and-a-half-inch reels and full-size ambition.
The A-6300 was Teac aiming squarely at the semi-pro market — a 4-head, three-motor deck built to take the big 10½" reels that separate a serious machine from a home appliance. This Mk2 revision is the one most collectors look for, refined from the original A-6300 that launched a couple of years earlier.

SECTION 01

The Merits

Everything about this deck is built around handling big reels seriously: a 10½" capacity transport, hyperbolic permalloy heads chosen for their hardness and low noise, and Teac’s 3J adjustment system — independent bias, equalizer, and level trim — so the machine can actually be tuned to whatever tape you feed it rather than accepting one factory compromise.
It also does auto-reverse playback via a sensing-foil system on the tape — not a full reverse-record deck like the X-10R, but enough to let a long reel play through both directions unattended, with a counter-repeat mode for looping a section back to back.
A machine built to be tuned to the tape in front of it, not the other way around.
SECTION 02

The Quirks

The reverse-play sensing foil is a period-correct piece of engineering — a small strip of foil tape at each end triggers the direction change — and it’s exactly the kind of thing that needs checking on a machine this old, since a missing or misaligned strip means the auto-reverse simply won’t fire.
At 22 kg, this is the heaviest machine in the collection so far. It sits on a shelf and stays there; moving it is a two-person job.
SECTION 03

The Sound

Full and confident, especially at 7½ ips on a big reel — the extended high-frequency response up to 28 kHz gives it real headroom above what most home listening actually needs, which is exactly the kind of overbuilt spec sheet a semi-pro deck is supposed to have.
SECTION 04

Buying One

Ask whether the 3J bias/EQ/level trims have ever been serviced — on a deck this tunable, a previous owner’s well-meaning but incorrect adjustment can do more damage to the sound than any worn part.
How mine runs in the Philippines
The capstan is a hysteresis synchronous motor, which locks its speed to mains frequency rather than correcting for it electronically — the same caveat as the Revox A77 in this collection. Worth confirming the rating plate before assuming it’s set up correctly for 60 Hz; Teac’s home-market decks of this era were commonly built to handle both 50 and 60 Hz since Japan itself uses both, but it’s worth checking rather than assuming on a specific unit.
