Buying One
First, temper expectations on finding one at all. The DH-610S rarely left Japan, so buying one almost always means the Japanese second-hand market — auction sites, surplus broadcast gear, listings marked “junk” that may just mean “untested.” That’s also the opportunity: ex-station machines were maintained on a schedule for their working lives, and a tired-looking broadcast deck is often mechanically healthier than a pampered consumer one.
Inspect where the tape touches. The pinch roller is fifty-year-old rubber and will likely be hardened or glazed — audible as flutter and edge damage — but re-rubbering services handle it easily, so treat it as a negotiating point. The hard permalloy heads wear slowly by design, but an ex-broadcast machine may have run tape for tens of thousands of hours, so look for flats and check the gaps. Confirm the back-tension servo actually behaves across a full reel (watch the tape at both ends), work every transport control, and assume the electrolytic capacitors in the amplifier units want replacing if there’s no service history. Caps and rollers are generic fixes any competent tech can do; what you won’t find is a drop-in parts supply, so a machine that’s complete matters more here than one that’s cosmetically pretty.
Power is simpler than it looks. Survivors are overwhelmingly Japanese domestic units built for 100 V — never feed one 220 V directly. But mains frequency is a non-issue: because the capstan is an AC servo reading its own speed magnetically, it doesn’t care whether your grid runs 50 or 60 Hz. Right voltage in, correct pitch out, anywhere in the world.
Most of my collection came from Japan, so 100 V machines are the rule here. Philippine mains is 220 V / 60 Hz — each Japanese deck lives behind a step-down transformer, and any machine with a frequency-sensitive motor gets set to its 60 Hz position, which happily matches our grid. This one’s capstan is servo-controlled, so the transformer alone does the job.
